Insurance
The most
valuable ‘item’ that you will ever insure is the health of you and
your family. Irish Health
insurance companies have been in the news in recent years and names
like BUPA and QUINN and V.H.I health insurance companies are well
known to all who have an interest in this area.
Terms like ‘Risk Equalisation’ trip from the tongue in the
pub (until after a pint or two) (Remember not to drive!)
We all tend to be bar-room lawyers when it comes to health
insurance, and yet we are all guilty of not being quite sure what we
are covered for. How could we understand it all?
For instance, can you answer all these questions? Am I covered
for visits to a specialist? Can
I recover the cost of fifty physiotherapy sessions at eighty euros
/pounds per session? On my
Irish Health insurance, can I go overseas to get health treatment that
is necessary for my health but not available in
Ireland
? If I attend Accident and
Emergency am I covered for the cost of the visit, the x-rays, the
blood tests? Do I have to
spend a night in hospital to be covered?
Are all procedures covered?
Can I get a private room in
Ireland
with my health insurance? Do
I have to go into a hospital or can I go into a private clinic?
Is the Blackrock Clinic covered with my health insurance
policy? Do my kids have
the same cover as I have? How
about dental work, cosmetic surgery?
Are you covered for all maternity and post-natal care?
Men in particular are noted
for buying expensive toys and throwing away the manuals.
Don’t behave in a similar fashion with your health insurance
policy…or any insurance policy for that matter.
Read everything. Make
a note of questions as you go along.
Ask the questions in a letter to the company.
Keep the replies!
You have been warned!
