This
Year’s Cork Week Sailing Festival Is to Run From The 10th to the
16th of July.
Anyone
with even a passing interest in sailing will love the excitement of Cork
Week, Ireland’s largest sailing regatta, located in the
buzzing harbour of Ireland’s second city.
Hosted
every other year, Cork Week is organised by the Royal Cork
Yacht Club, said to be one of the oldest Yacht clubs in Ireland.
Located in Crosshaven, County Cork, the regatta attracts sailors
from all over the world, where sailing boats pepper the beautiful
coastline in a plethora of colours.
Not
only an offshore event, there are a mass of onshore activities being
held throughout the week, and celebrations always last well into the
small hours. Cork City recently received a top 10 position in cities
to visit in 2010 by the prestigious world-guide, Lonely Planet. So
even for those of you who are unsure of their sea legs, Cork Week
will be a fantastic event to be part of, but make sure that you book
your car hire at
Cork airport, because with a massive 10,000 visitors arriving
last year, and this year’s event set to trump that, tourist
amenities will be in high demand.
Sailors
arrive from all four corners of
the globe to participate in Cork Week, previous years saw
sailors arriving from New Zealand, Wales, Philippines, South Africa,
Sweden and the United States, as well as from all over Europe.
Cork
Week always features what has come to be considered as a
‘tented-village’, transient in nature, the harbour comes alive
with a range of shops, bars, and restaurants- all trading from
marquees. At night, Cork Week really comes into its own, with
entertainment varying from live music and bands to various shows.
For
those of you who love a touch of class, make sure that you pack your
ball gowns and tuxedos. Cork Week Ball, which is held the evening
before the main event, is always a much loved and popular event,
attracting some of Munster’s most rich and famous aristocrats. The
evening begins with a complementary champagne cocktail, followed by
a Gala Dinner and then the main dance.
Cork
Week is always a huge success, largely due to the masses of
people it attracts, who come from all walks of life. With sailing
competitions, courses, great company, fantastic entertainment,
wonderful food, and of course the odd glass of Guinness, Cork Week
is a must for anyone wanting to experience that wonderful
hospitality for which Ireland is renowned.
