Beast of Ballyhoura  Adventure Race

If you are looking for an interesting and unique experience for your summer holiday this year, then look no further than County Cork and the ‘Beast of Ballyhoura Adventure Race’. Only for the strong of heart, this is a 36 hour, non-stop race!

During the event participants will have to run across the mystical and antiquated landscapes of counties Cork, Limerick, and Tipperary. Amongst the various stages of the race are a bike run, kayak run, mountaineering (which includes an abseil for the brave of heart), orienteering, etc ...  as teams of four find the best route across the terrain in their race to the finish line.

Additionally, the Beast of Ballyhoura race includes the 6 hour All Ireland Inter Services Challenge, a gruelling leg whose aim is to discover the strongest service men and women in the country.

The event is run from the 30th of July to the 2nd of August 2010. On Sunday the 1st of August, the Blackrock Challenge will push competitors to the brink in a race that will see participants cover an 80km leg, 65km on mountain bike and a 15km hill run!

This event should only be considered by those of you wishing to test their abilities to their true limits; it will be tough and challenging, both mentally and physically. During the event, there will be a height gain of 2,000 meters, which is basically a 2km increase – or a lot of uphill running! The majority of the terrain is mountainous and many parts of the track only allow for single file racing.

On the Sunday, the Ballyhoura Blitz will be held, this comprises of a 10km hill run, followed by a 20km bike ride through the picturesque Ballyhoura Mountains. The race is for adventurers only! If you are feeling brave, you will be well rewarded taking part, it is a true test of endurance and determination. If it sounds a bit too much, a car hire from Cork airport will allow overseas visitors to experience the terrain, without having to over-exert yourselves – those of you looking for a relaxing holiday should try this latter route.
